Microsoft lays out plans for blockchain-based digital IDs

Here are the big takeaways: Microsoft recently joined ID2020 as a founding member, committing $1 million to the initiative that aims to develop a secure, portable, blockchain-based form of digital identity. Microsoft plans to help the 1.1 billion people around the world who lack any legal form of identity gain access to a secure, encrypted digital hub where they can store their identity data and easily control access to it.

Over the past year, Microsoft has made a number of investments in using blockchain and other distributed ledger technologies to create new types of secure digital identities. On Monday, the company described its roadmap for the continuing use of these technologies to improve the lives of refugees and others who lack identification.
