Panchayat Raj varsity VC, daughter lose Rs 69k to phishing - Times of India

Bengaluru: Prof Thimmegowda, the vice-chancellor of Karnataka State Rural Development and Panchayat Raj University, Gadag, is the latest to fall prey to phishing scamsters. Incidentally, Prof Thimmegowda, the VC, shared his and his daughter’s debit card details with the scamsters who had called him on Friday midnight, even as his wife cautioned him against doing so. The VC realised the fraud only after Rs 69,997 was debited from his and his daughter’s bank accounts.

Thimmegowda was at his home in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Bengaluru, when he received a call around 12am. The caller identified himself as a representative of State Bank of India (SBI) and said the professor and his daughter’s debit cards would expire due to a few technical issues and they’d have to set right things if they did not want it to happen.

The caller asked Thimmegowda to share his and his daughter's debit card numbers and also asked for the One Time Passwords (OTPs) which came to their mobile numbers. All...(continued)
