Nigerian sentenced to 17 months for phishing scheme - Rutland Herald


A Nigerian man, who admitted to being part of a conspiracy to steal personal information from U.S. residents, including some employees of the state of Vermont, was scheduledThursday to receive a sentence of 17 months in prison.

Eneye Dania, 31, pleaded guilty in U.S. federal court in March to conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Osariemen Isibor, 32, pleaded guilty to the same charge in the same court in March. Isibor is scheduled to be sentenced in the Rutland federal courthouse on Tuesday.

In a sentencing memorandum, the prosecutors described the conspiracy as “fooling United States residents … into sending the logon information they used to access their IRS form W-2 data from their employer’s website to another website designed to look like their employer’s human resources page but actually operated by the conspiracy to collect this data.”

While the goal of the conspiracy was to trick the IRS into sending refunds to the members of the conspiracy, the memo said IRS...(continued)
