SaskTel warns about phishing scam text messages - larongeNOW

SaskTel is warning customers to beware of phishing scams via text message.

Throughout the week, some residents of the tri-communities have been receiving a text message stating SaskTel overcharged an account due to a billing error and a refund has been sent. Below the message, there’s a link to deposit the alleged funds, but according to SaskTel Director of External Communications Michelle Englot, no companies send out notices via text messages about such issues.

“It is usually a phishing scam where they are looking for your financial information or access to your phone,” she said. “Our advice for customers is to simply delete the text message.”

If for some reason the link had been pressed, Englot recommends people to change the passwords on their phone. She also noted when such scams occur on a wide-scale, a public service advisory would be issued, but recently it seems the text messages are being sent more randomly.
