ETSU investigating "phishing" breach, personal information of 7,700 people at risk

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. --- Sources tell News 5 that an investigation is underway into a breach of two employee email accounts through a "phishing" scheme, which gave an unauthorized person access to the personal information of thousands of people.

A source presented News 5 with an email distributed to ETSU faculty and staff on Monday, and a spokesman for ETSU confirmed the breach.

According to ETSU, the university learned of an initial breach of an employee's email account on Oct. 17. The account was immediately disabled, and an investigation was launched.

A second breach using the same phishing email was detected on Oct. 26 involving a different employee. The account was immediately disabled, and an investigation was launched.

An email warning faculty and staff of the breach says both employees had access to the personal information of other university employees because of their jobs.
