When Wojciech Pazdur was 8 or 9 years old, his father, a Polish nuclear physician, came home from work and said all their equipment had gone crazy. He said that meant "something bad had happened".

It was 26 April 1986 in what was then the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic of the Soviet Union, and something very bad had happened. The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant had exploded, sending radioactive debris into the sky over Europe as emergency crews battled deadly radioactivity to bring the catastrophe under control.

Thirty years later, Wojciech Pazdur is part of the team that visited the abandoned city of Pripyat, home of the Chernobyl plant, to create a 3D virtual reality version of the now-deserted area.
