Diocese of Des Moines says it was scammed out of $45,000 - Des Moines Register

Cybercriminals havescammed the Diocese of Des Moinesout of more than $45,000.

Someone impersonating a diocesan employee Thursday requested $45,880.90and it was sent to that person or group, according to a diocese news release sent Saturday. It is unclear who in the diocese sent the money and a call for comment was not immediately returned Saturday night.

"We expect the investigation to show that this was someone from outside the diocese's employment who illegally obtained funds that are used to help people grow in their faith," Bishop Richard Pates said. "The transfer of funds was clearly a mistake, the...(continued)
